Congratulations

Brunswick Central School District would like to congratulate two of our juniors: Maille Maloney and Julius Miller.

On March 18, 2024, over 80 Questar III BOCES Career and Technical Education students from Donald R. Kline Technical School and Robert H. Gibson Technical School joined another 300+ students from 10 different New York technical schools, covering an area from Plattsburgh to Hudson, for the SkillsUSA New York State Area III competition. Students competed and showcased the technical skills specific to their program, along with career readiness and leadership skills.

Maille Maloney placed first in Criminal Justice and Julius Miller placed second in Related Technical Math.

Maille's program involves multiple areas of Criminal Justice study: a corrections unit, law enforcement, forensics, courts & law and private security. Maille plans to continue in the Questar III program next year which will reinforce her skills and get her ready for the practical exam. Next year will also bring internship opportunities with Troy Police Department, where Maille is currently a Troy Police Cadet. After graduation, Maille hopes to study psychology at UC Berkley and then come back home to the Capital District. She hopes to become a patrol officer and in the K9 unit.

Maille's placed first in a group of nine participants. They first had to complete a sample civil service exam. Following that, they were each given the same assault scenario where a suspect was interviewed and arrested. They were judged on their handcuffing technique, their ability to search a suspect, how well the arrest went and how to roll fingerprints.

Maille would like to tell students interested in applying for this program to work hard and remain dedicated. While it's not an easy course, it is very rewarding.

Fun fact about Maille: She is a singer/songwriter.

Julius Miller is currently a junior at Tamarac and placed second in Related Technical Math (the type of math that is used in everyday scenarios: perimeter, volumes, etc.). His program currently involves EPA Review (608 refrigerants, Core type 1, 2 and 3), certifications and will next year include 'big systems' and compressors. Julius' brother inspired him to become involved with this program.

The competition had six total participants and consisted of 50 open ended questions. He received a medal for placing second. Julius would like to tell anyone interested in the future to talk to their counselor about opportunities with Questar and to attend their open house.

Fun fact about Julius: He's a bowler!
