In times like these we often have to think out of the box. That was no problem for Mrs. Gilcrest and her 'Hallway Book Exchange' in the elementary school. Not only does this give an opportunity for our students to browse current library inventory, it builds a bond between librarian and student and triggers meaningful conversation.
We recently asked Mrs. Gilcrest and Mrs. King what they are currently reading and this is what they shared:
Mrs. Gilcrest said, "This year I am only reading uplifting Christmas stories or Christmas "Cozies" during December! One of my favorite children's Christmas books is Cobweb Christmas by Shirley Climo. Heartwarming!"
Mrs. King responded, "I just did an author study with 2nd grade about Chris Van Allsburg and books besides the Polar Express that he has written. (The Sweetest Fig, Two Bad Aunts). Then we read The Polar Express and compared and contrasted the book and the movie and now they are watching the movie, but with the book in mind to catch differences and similarities. It’s one of my favorite things to do in December.
So, I would recommend students and families take a look at favorite movies that came from books and reread the books and watch the movies to see how closely or not the stories stay true to the book! One I’m going to study with the 5th grades is Hugo Cabret. This can be done at so many ages and with so many books! Charlotte’s Web, Jumanji, Harry Potter, Peter Rabbit. Endless possibilities! :)
